Mary McGuire Smith has
over 25 years as a professional in dressage.
She was introduced to dressage as a working student for a German
Berieter and international competitor and trainer in Three Day Eventing.
She continued to
study classical dressage after opening her own dressage sport horse
breeding and young horse training facility which she operated with her
husband in
Florida
. She concentrated on starting
young horses that she bred and continuing with them until they were sold,
which was often very soon after initial training.
This gave her much experience with young horses, but after a while
she found that she wanted to add to her knowledge of the upper levels of
dressage, and to work with a broader range of horse breeds.
In 1993 she audited
the USDF “L” judges program, and studied right along with the
candidates…the only thing that the auditors did not participate in was
the final testing, so she gained all the knowledge that was imparted on
those who took the final test.
In 1996-1999 Mary
participated in and audited all of the USDF Certified Instructor’s
program divisions—riding, longeing horse and rider, and teaching.
In 1998 Mary
participated in a USDF Sport Horse Breeding seminar
In 1998 Mary was
accepted into the National Association of Equine Appraisers, specializing
in Arabian and Warmblood Appraisals
From 2001-2006, Mary
studied in Europe every summer to gain a greater understanding of the
riding and training of FEI level horses, and studied under Herr Egon von
Neindorff in Germany (the last German master of the classical dressage,
including airs above the ground), Stephan Kiessewetter and Christianne
Bocholt of the International Dressage Academy in Germany, Coralie Baldrey
of Portugal, the masters at Kobilarna Lipizza in Slovenia (the original
stud farm responsible for the development of the Lipizzan horse for the
Austrian Empire from 1540AD), and Joaquin Orth of Mexico (1996 Olympics),
among others.
Consequently, she has
experience in the training of a wide variety of horse breeds and types
through the highest levels, including most of the European Warmblood
breeds, Quarter Horses, Thoroughbreds, Arabians, Lipizzans, Lusitanos,
several Draft types, Friesians, Tinkers (Gypsy Vanners), Connemara, Welsh,
New Forest Pony, German Riding Pony, Norwegian Fjords, Haflingers, and
many crosses. She has also
worked with several gaited breeds in the lower levels to improve balance
and suppleness.
She has attended
clinics with Klaus Balkenhol, Harry Boldt, Arthur Kottas, Ingrid Klimke,
and Christoff Hess of Germany, Ron Smeets of Holland, and Heather Bender,
Robert
Dover and Michael Poulin of the United States, among many other
international riders and trainers. She
currently trains the most consistently with Michael Poulin, 2-time Olympic
Team Bronze Medalist; one of the most successful
U.S.
dressage trainers of our era.
Mary’s philosophy
is a solid foundation in the training scale, and a steady and committed
plan for rising to the highest level of horsemanship through Dressage
Training, with an ever-present eye on the happy, steady development of the
horse to the highest level of athleticism.
Mary’s students
have competed at the local, state and regional levels and have garnered
hundreds of wins in dressage on every level, but Mary’s philosophy is
true and correct horsemanship, and the classically correct development of
your horse, whether you compete or not.
