Scoring and Judging Guidelines

**All classes are Multi-discipline (MD) and the riders/horses will be judged according to the standards of their discipline (discipline evidenced by tack and show attire).  three basic speeds will be demonstrated during the show depending on what discipline you are riding.    Slow= Walk, Medium=  the horses medium gait weather its called a trot, running walk, or rack and Fast = canter or lope.

** Equitation classes are those where the riders’ position is judged, not the horses’ way of going.  Basic equitation is the same regardless of discipline, with only slight variations.  Ex: There should be a straight line from the riders’ ear, thru the shoulder, hip, to the heel.  There should be a straight line from the riders elbow to the horses’ mouth.  Horses with a higher head carriage will require a higher hand position to maintain a straight line than those with a lower head carriage.

**A green horse is one with limited experience(s) and/or limited time under saddle. The green horse classes evaluate the horses’ way of going and training, per the desired goals of the riders’ discipline. The riders’ position is not the judged except where the rider’s position affects the horse’s performance or, a task is not executed. Over-all mental relaxation without being sluggish and accurate transitions without abruptness will be rewarded.

**Jumping tests:   Jumping tests will be conducted after each corresponding Combined test (2’3 jumpers will be after tadpole, 2’6 after beginner novice, etc).  Refusals and rails are each 4 penalties each.  Scoring standards:  Fastest clean round wins.  If no clean rounds, the fastest round with the fewest penalties wins.

**Combined tests are a combination of a dressage ride and a jumping round per the rules stated by the United States Eventing association.  Scores are converted into penalty points and averaged together.  The rider with the lowest average wins.

Sc                               More stuff about Scoring:

Combined Tests:  The USEA recognizes the BN-Advanced levels.  Schooling shows are shows that have levels lower than BN and/or are not conducted using USEA licensed officials (and therefore are cheaper to run and enter!).  Combined Tests are where two phases of eventing are conducted instead of 3. Fairhaven Farm Schooling Combined Tests are conducted as closely as possible to the USEA rules in order to familiarize and prepare the competitors and horses  with  rules/regs for their future shows at the recognized level.

Phase 1 is Dressage.  Each division is assigned a test by the governing agency and all the competitors in the division execute the same test.  Movements are graded on a scale of 1-10, with 10 being the highest possible score per task.  Total good points are added together and subtotaled.  Then, errors are subtracted (Use of voice, clicking, error of course: 1st error: -2pts, 2nd error -4pts, 3rd error elimination).  The new subtotal is then converted to a percentage by dividing this subtotal by the total possible points if the rider had gotten all 10’s!  Example:  110 total good points divided by a perfect score of 200 possible points = .55 multiplied by 100 to make it 55%.  In straight dressage you would stop here.  In Eventing, everything is based on penalties so the lowest score wins.  Therefore, dressage “good” percentages must be converted to “bad penalties”.  To do this you take the reciprocal of the good percentage.  A 55% is the same thing as 45 penalties.  In eventing, tests must be conducted from memory.

Phase 2:  Show Jumping or XC (Show Jumping at this show)

Each rider of a division rides the same pattern, at the same height, trying to get closest to the ideal pace, set by the USEA or the show organizer.

  First disobedience 4 penalties

Second disobedience or other under rule  8 penalties

Third disobedience , Elimination

Fall of horse or competitor or both, Elimination.

Exceeding the time limit, Elimination

Exceeding the time allowed 1 penalty for each second or commenced fraction of a second.

Penalties for the disobediences accumulate, not just at the same obstacle, but throughout the entire round.

Show organizers then average the dressage score with the jumping score to get the final combined score.  The fewest penalties, or lowest score wins.

Show Jumping Only:

Each disobedience = 4 penalties.  Fastest clean round wins.  Don’t be tricked into thinking the most “speed demon” will win.  Often, the faster a horse goes, the less time a rider has to correct a mistake, a drift for example, and the horse runs out.  Some horses get flat in their form when they go charging around and pull rails either with their front legs or rear legs……….”Slower is often faster”!

Group classes are run as in open shows and are more subjective.  The equitation classes are judged on the rider’s position alone.  The “under saddle” classes judge the horse alone, except where the rider makes such a grave mistake (posting on the wrong diagonal), it’s treated as if the horse didn’t execute the movement at all.

Dressage Only:

Is judged as phase 1 of a CT (see above).  At recognized shows, only a snaffle bit is allowed unless specified in the rules.  Unlike eventing, tests are allowed to be “called” by another person and don’t have to be conducted from memory.
